Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham, Sringeri

New branch of Sri Sringeri Math in sacred Ayodhya

July 14, 2022

Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankara Bhagavatpada established the Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham, the first of the four Amnaya Peethams at Sringeri more than twelve centuries ago to foster the tradition of Sanatana Dharma. Sri Sringeri Sharada Peetham is bedecked with an unbroken chain of Acharyas and continues to uphold the principles of Sanatana Dharma as envisioned by Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya.

Today, on the sacred occasion of Guru Poornima, the present Peethadhipati, Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji alongwith His successor designate Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharathi Mahaswamiji has performed Vyasa Puja in Sringeri and has undertaken His 48th Chaturmasya Sankalpa.

On such an auspicious occasion, with the Blessings of the Ubhaya Jagadgurus, I am very happy to announce that the Sringeri Math will establish a branch at Ayodhya, the holy site of the birthplace of Bhagavan Sri Rama.

The connection between Bhagavan Sri Rama and Sringeri stretches back to the events leading to the Avatara itself. Sringeri is the Tapobhoomi of the great sage, Maharshi Rishyashringa. The Valmiki Ramayana describes that Maharaja Dasharatha, desiring progeny, invited Maharshi Rishyashringa to officiate in the Putra Kameshti Yaga which led to the Avatara of Bhagavan Sri Rama.

Sri Sringeri Math has taken over the Management of “Sunder Sadan”, Ramkot, Ayodhya and will establish its branch at Sunder Sadan in close proximity to the sacred Sri Ram Janmabhoomi temple. The existing temple of Sri Rama pariwar and Sri Radhakrishna inside the Sunder Sadan premises will be renovated and new temples for Goddess Sharada and Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya will be constructed.

We also propose to construct a dharmashala (boarding and lodging) to cater to the needs of pilgrims visiting Ayodhya. The branch will have all facilities that a pilgrim looks for, similar to the facilities maintained by the Math in prominent Tirtha Kshetras such as Kashi, Rameswaram, Prayag, Mathura, Nasik, Srisailam, Tirupati etc. The Ayodhya branch of the Sringeri Math will also have a hall for conducting pravachanas and a facility for performing homas.

The renovation/ reconstruction work will start once we get the required approvals from concerned authorities.

For example, care of aged parents is something that has come down to us traditionally and we must never neglect this duty by imbibing concepts of some free societies, wherein concern for one’s own parents is at low ebb.
