Sri Vidyashankara temple Kumbhabhisheka performed

On February 3, 2023 (Shubhakrit Samvatsara Magha Shuddha Trayodashi), Kumbhabhisheka of the famous Vidyashankara temple in the premises of Sringeri Math took place. 

Sringeri Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahasannidhanam performed a special Puja during the Meena Lagna at around 10 am. Amidst the chant of Vedic mantras, Sri Mahasannidhanam performed Abhisheka to the sacred Shivalinga with various Mangala dravyas. Thereafter, Jagadguru Sri Mahasannidhanam and Jagadguru Sri Sri Vidhushekhara Bharati Sannidhanam performed the Kumbhabhisheka at the Garbha Griha. 

The Vidyashankara temple is built upon the Samadhi of the 10th Acharya of Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Jagadguru Sri Vidyatirtha in the 14th century. Jagadguru Sri Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji was a Mahayogi and undertook Samadhi through Lambika Yoga. The temple was built in the middle of the 14th century by the Mahaswamiji’s successor, Jagadguru Sri Bharati Tirtha under the patronage of the famous Vijayanagara empire. The Vijayanagara empire, which was instrumental in protecting Sanatana Dharma from external conquests, was founded with the guidance of Jagadguru Sri Vidyaranya Mahaswamiji, the second illustrious disciple of Jagadguru Sri Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji.

The Sringeri Jagadgurus have the title “Sri Vidyashankara Paada Padma Aaraadhaka” and conduct the Vidyashankara Rathotsava in the Kartika Masa every year. The previous Kumbhabhisheka of this historic temple was performed by Sri Mahasannidhanam in February 2012.  

The present Kumbhabhisheka was performed on the same Tithi as the Prathishtha Kumbhabhisheka day of the Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya temple in Sringeri. This temple had been consecrated by Sri Mahasannidhanam on the same Tithi (Magha Shuddha Trayodashi) in the year 2011. Prior to performing today’s Kumbhabhisheka, Sri Mahasannidhanam went to the temple of Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya, offered homage and witnessed Mahamangalarati performed after Shatarudra Abhisheka. Later, Sri Sannidhanam also had Darshan at the temple of Jagadguru Sri Adi Shankaracharya.
