Jagadguru performing Ganga Puja on the occasion of Dakshinayana Punyakala

Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji observed the Dakshinayana Punyakala at Sringeri on the 17th of July 2014. The Dakshinayana occurs when the Surya moves from the Mithuna Rashi to the Karkataka Rashi. The Dharma Shastras proclaim the last twelve hours preceding this change of zodiac to be auspicious and hence the term Dakshinayana Punya Kaala. In continuation with the age-old tradition of the Sringeri Math, the Jagadguru performed Snana and an elaborate Ganga Puja during the Dakshinayana Punya Kala on the Southern Banks of the Tunga River amidst continuous and heavy down pour. After Mahamangalarati, the Jagadguru proceeded to Adhishtana Mandirams and witnessed the Aarati at the Adhishtanams of His Guru, Paramaguru and Parameshtiguru.
