In Thanjavur district, there are many temples even prior to the Ramayana era. Many of them are now in a dilapidated condition without even one time pooja or archakaa, These temples are very significant spiritually.

Sri Seshapureeshwarar
There is a temple for Shri Seshapureeswarar at Rappatteeswaram in Thiruvarur district. The spiritually significant temple today is in a dilapidated state. The name Rappatteeswaram is derived from Rg Veda Ratri Sooktham which was awarded to earth from here. Kamadenu got her four daughters Patti, Nandini, Vimalai and Sabali after performing pooja to Shri Seshapureeswarar (Ratri Sooktham + Patti+ Eeshwar).
It is well known that Sri Agastya-Rishi gave Sri Aditya Hridyam upadesam to Lord Sri Ramachandra in the battlefield at Lanka during the war. According to a Siddha grantha named ‘Adi Saura Puranam’, Sri Agastya-Rishi again recited Aditya Hridyam stotram for Sri Rama at two Bhaskara Shakti Sthalas – One is Suraikayur and the other is Rappatteswaram.
Shri Dakshinamoorthy
It is said that Sri Dakshinamurti gave Updesam of Jnana to Mother Saraswathi and Vidya to Mother Lakshmi in this place. Both Gynana Saraswathi and Vidya Lakshmi are at the entrance.

Chandana Vidya means “spiritual wisdom” which can spread to all worlds. The education or very high academic qualifications ceases at the end of each birth. In the next birth, the education has to start from LKG once again. Unlike the worldly education, one carries the level of spiritual wisdom acquired in this birth to next birth. The spiritual wisdom in the subsequent birth starts from where it was left off in the earlier birth. This fragrant spread of spiritual wisdom is called “chandana vidya” in Siva Agama grantha.
Therefore, at this temple, during solar chaitra month, Shatabhishak nakshatra, abhishekam of chandana, physically ground by devotees, is done to the majestic idol of Shri Dakshinamoorthy. Annadanam on this day is organised by Sringeri Math,Pune branch.
